<Completion Ceremony with Residents and Students from the Village>
On February 23, 2011, the second Human School was completed for children in Tharpu, one of the most remote villages after the first Human School opened in Pangboche(4060m above sea leavel) on a corner Mt. Everest, the highest mountain in the world.
The school is 95km northwest away from Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal, and 25km west away from Trishuli region, one of famous LangTang Himalaya trekking courses. This area is a remote place where farming in terraced fields has been people’s day job and they have suffered from the “Extreme Poverty.” They are away from the benefits of civilization.
The Second Human School was completed in July, 2010 after 8 months of the construction period, supported by Korea Lions Club of District 354D of Korea and Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA). Since it was impossible to use heavy equipment due to the characteristics of rugged mountain region, Mr. HONG Soon Deok, a construction manager of the site dispatched from UHGHF, had to use only a pure manual work of local labors. That was a result of overcoming all the difficulties in procurement of construction materials and manpower caused by the monsoon climate (unique rainy season in Nepal) and the tough mountainous terrain.
The school is on the hill of Tharpu village with the full south aspect, comprised of the floor space of 1,300㎡, the second floor building space of 540㎡, 3 classrooms of 66.1㎡, 1 computer room, 1 library, 1 nurse’s office, 1 administration office, 1 community hall, toilet, water fountain, a playground and etc. People might wonder why the toilet or the water fountain is part of facilities. That is because a lot of schools in Nepal don’t have them. After the dedication ceremony of the Human School, children gathered in the playground all day long and made a line to take a slide and to ride a swing for the first time in their life.
In the dedication ceremony, residents and school’s staff members said, “Thank you Korea. We appreciate it so much. What can we say? We didn’t expect you’re coming in this backcountry to build a school for us. Before, we only know the name of “Korea” after few missionaries visited. Moreover, installing a computer lab and equipment will also help our children develop their dreams in the future. Korean staff members said “The power of education played the biggest part, so that Korea was able to get out from the poverty. We hope this school could be a stepping stone for the children who can play a large role in all levels of Nepal.
Students and teachers of the surrounding area came to the school and said, “The school will be a good model for remote areas in Nepal. It is a reasonable and well-designed space with a computer lab and even good for residents and the community. The environmental facilities are so clean.”
